Elementary schools in our area have a responsibility to create a safe and welcoming environment for all students. Teachers should be trained in identifying and addressing bullying behavior. There should also be clear policies and procedures in place for reporting and investigating incidents of bullying at elementary schools. SchoolAssemblies' antibullying programs (STAND UP, STEP IN, STOP BULLYING) can be helpful in raising awareness and promoting positive social interactions among students.
Long Island offers a variety of resources to help families and schools address bullying. There are a number of hotline numbers and websites that provide information on how to identify and deal with bullying behavior. In addition, there are many organizations that offer support groups and counseling services for those affected by bullying.
With the help of these resources combined with in-school programming that raises awareness for elementary school-aged children, we can work together to create a safer community for everyone.
